Email Marketing vs. Social Media — Where the Money Really Is

By Amaury · Affiliate marketing

Social media feels like marketing. It's visible, it's social, the likes feel like progress. But compare the numbers honestly and the contest isn't close.

Reach: an email list of 5,000 with a 20% open rate puts your message in front of 1,000 people. A social account with 5,000 followers and a 3% algorithmic reach puts it in front of 150. Same audience size, nearly 7x the reach — and the email reach is stable while the social reach shrinks every year.

Ownership: your email list is an asset you control. Your social following is rented from a landlord who changes the rent (reach) whenever they want. Accounts get banned, algorithms shift, platforms die — ask anyone who built on MySpace or Vine. Email has worked the same way for 30 years.

Cost: sending 5,000 emails costs pennies or nothing. Reaching 5,000 followers with a boosted post costs real money, every time, forever.

Intent: someone who gave you their email address raised their hand. Someone who scrolled past your video didn't. Email subscribers are pre-qualified; social viewers are pre-distracted.

This doesn't mean abandon social media — it's a fine top-of-funnel, a way to be discovered. But the business lives in the inbox. Use social to get attention; use email to get revenue. Every social profile should funnel to an email opt-in, because followers are borrowed and subscribers are owned.

The gurus with million-follower accounts all have the same secret: their real business is the email list they built before they were famous. Build yours now, while it's cheap and quiet.
