5 Subject Line Formulas That Get Opens

By Amaury · Affiliate marketing

The subject line is 80% of the email. Master these five formulas and you'll never stare at a blank subject field again.

1. The curiosity gap. Tease without revealing: "the $1/day thing," "what I found at 2am." The email must pay off the tease — curiosity without payoff is clickbait, and clickbait burns trust permanently.

2. The specific number. "7 subject lines that doubled my opens," "my 10-minute routine." Numbers promise concrete, countable value. Odd numbers outperform even ones (7 beats 8 — tested endlessly).

3. The direct benefit. "100 leads a day, no ads." Tell them exactly what they'll get. Best for warm lists that already trust you — no teasing needed.

4. The story open. "I almost quit in week two." Honest vulnerability is nearly irresistible. Your worst moment is your best subject line — readers bond with struggle, not success.

5. The question. "Are you making trap #2?" Questions demand answers, and the answer is inside the email. Works especially well for re-engaging cold subscribers.

The universal rules: under 50 characters (mobile truncates the rest). No emojis — they hurt deliverability and scream "marketer." Curiosity beats cleverness — clear and intriguing outperforms witty and confusing. Never mislead — the subject must match the email.

Pro move: write five subject lines per email and pick the best. The first idea is rarely the winner. And keep a swipe file of every subject line that makes YOU click — it's free education from people paid to be good at this.
